In fact it took another four years and Hillsborough for the country to wake up. Now, as Liverpool prepare to take on Juve again Andrew Hussey has written a commentary on the events of that evening that every football fan should read.

Update: I've had a really good comment via email. Just to clear up, I meant that Hillsborough woke the nation up to issues around ground safety. Really he is. In yesterday's PMQs (he was standing in for TB), he came out with this:

If people are to judge on 5 May—the election will be on 5 May, will it not?

[Interruption.]

The right hon. and learned Gentleman seems to have forgotten that it is the county council elections that will be on 5 May

Hillary Armstrong's face was a picture when he came out with that - there was a moment when everyone thought he'd just let slip the date of the general election. Brilliant! In an age where political debate is in danger of growing stale and predictable you can always count on Prescott.

Incidentally, I love it when Hansard records an 'interruption'. I'd like to add my own plea to those considering reading the book. Please don't.

My reasons are wildly different to the Vatican's, however. It's just that the book is rubbish. No, that's not enough. I think that this is easily the worst book I've ever read. To say that it is terribly constructed, full of inconsistencies and the characters are laughable is simply inadequate. It is the literary equivalent of having warm milk poured directly into your brain. For hours after finishing the book I just stared into space, any chance of coherent thought nullified by the onslaught of sixth form plotlines I had just endured.

Take Leigh Teabing, the eccentric English academic. As an Englishman it is hard not to feel a little patronised by his characterisation. Look, he likes to drink tea! Oooo, see how the lower classes cow to his Lordship! I honestly wonder if Dan Brown has ever been to the UK.

Another example is Robert Langdon's flashback to his college lectures. It's hard to describe how unintentionally hilarious these passages are. Suffice to say I actually laughed out loud reading them.

It physically hurts me to think that there are so many great books in the world and that the Da Vinci Code is one of the most popular ever. Do yourselves a favour. Avoid it, or I'll track you down and beat you to into oblivion with a copy of Seize The Day. That's right! It will be a slow and painful death.

And if anyone is interested...

I had a hand in this. This detatchment from the standards that the rest of society adhere to is something that, sadly, is all too common in the game today.

Teehee

I love Unfogged. This made me laugh after a rubbish day in the office.

New! Essentially, this takes the Pop Idol format and replaces the musical hopefuls with would-be politicians. Good grief!

The first show was, to be honest, a real shocker. The initial interviews, usually the most entertaining part of Pop Idol, were frankly depressing. It is all very well seeing people making fools of themselves by butchering Ricky Martin tunes (if that's possible), but if I want to hear uninformed opinions from self important attention-seekers I'll just go to The Union. As well as this, I can't help but think that people are a little tired of the format, and that the subject matter is only really going to interest sad sacks like me.

Oh, and where will the winning candidate stand? Talk about humiliating! In my defence, I also drafted one for 9th June and even one for the 24th Feb. I've heard from the very highest authority that the Feb date may still happen, but it would have to be called in the next couple of weeks so I just don't buy it. I'm beginning to think that the symmetry of the May date appeals to a lot of the guys in the central party, who often keep half an eye on history.

Oh, and apologies for the errors in the post below - I was tired and not thinking straight. The Iraq thing applies, of course, to Feb.

I humbly back down...

...And wipe the egg off my face. But Kavanagh is still wrong I tell you! It is to be a June election, I'm sure of it this time (if you believe that you'll believe anything - ed).

Seriously though, it is interesting to speculate about why the February rumours faded. The party machinery was definitely moving and the polling workload was definitely stepping up. If I had to place a bet, I'd say that despite the fact that a winter-supressed turnout would favour Labour, a lot of political baggage needed to be shifted before the campaign proper could begin (fox-hunting etc.)

Likewise, 050505 is probably a bad call as there will be local elections and hot (well, warm) weather to boost the turnout. Additionally, you can't discount the damaged caused by the high political profile of Iraq, with the elections due then (although this isn't my personal view).

So I stick my neck out once more and say June, where we've had five of the last six polls. Kevin's an interesting guy who recently worked as a speechwriter in the Bush administration (this is where I'd usually insert some kind of glib comment, but Kevin's far too nice...). Read his blog - I'm sure it will be good.

As an aside, he's posted some pictures of him meeting the President. While this is cool in itself, I found it really interesting as in some way it made GWB seem more human to me. His basic argument is that Chirac is thoroughly disagreeable. He's right - of course - the man's more than a little dodgy. But I do think that the 'violent love' that Chirac talks about between our countries is nothing new. Some of us applauded (some still do) de Gaulle's 'Non'. Reaching deeper into history, think of the reaction in Britain to the French Revolution (we sent troops to France).

There's nothing really new here, and it is difficult to capture exactly how it feels to be a British Francophile. You should go and read it - really. He's capable of writing with immense sensitivity. He has a way of opening you up to ideas and opinions that you would never normally share.

But then...he comes out with something like this. On the face of it a reasonable post (its point about the BBC's timeline is particularly good, though I think he's doing Plett a disservice). And with the rumpus over Boris Johnson rumbling on I'm beginning to wonder whether it's silly season. Below is a list of my favourite resignations. A special mention for any memorable resignation stories readers are willing to share:

1) Geoffrey Howe, 1990
2) Peter Mandelson (both times...and I'm including his 'scary' comeback in Hartlepool)
3) Edwina Currie, 1988
4) Richard Nixon, 1974 (token US effort, not very memorable)
5) Margaret Thatcher, 1990 (Oh, the tears!!!!)

Update: OK, so maybe not Rummy...

It's OK, we forgive you

http://www.sorryeverybody.com

A big, belated welcome

With typical timing, I'd like to formally welcome Coop to the blog. Well, you could wheel out the single parent argument, but I think that God was prolly more than enough mother and father (plus they had the host of angels guarding and looking after them). Adam, of course, could claim that Eve led him astray (boo!)
So then, could it have been, instead, in Eve's nature? But could God have given Eve naughty genes? Unlikely.

What, then, it boils down to is, as always, peer pressure. Satan, disguised as a garden snake actually tells Eve that it will make her smarter and Adam will respect her more. Oh and she'll look really cool.

By the way, don't beleive the computer. This was posted by me. I am on sabbatical from Xanga for a week, or until Hepcat chucks me off. I know nothing about politics or football (literature being my thang) but I guess he was just after the exposure of all of my loyal readers for a week.

Anyway, so, going with the political theme: over the past few weeks I have been looking at the power roles in Hamlet (suggested by a great BBC production). For example, I have been looking at the illegal transferal of the power of the crown. After his brother's death Claudius got the throne by two dodgy methods. Firstly, the system was crooked. Claudius appointed himself (with the aid of his corrupt council) King before Hamlet even has a chance to contest it. The country loved Hamlet more than Claudius (Cl admits this) and yet they didn't get a chance to have their voices heard (according to most political critics the king should have been elected by the people in this situation).

The second method is that he plays on his kingly abilities - Denmark is being threatened with war by a bloodthirsy adversary, and the people are turning to him to protect them. They are scared and worried that having Hamlet rule the country might be about as much use as letting Gerty run it. But he's still a murdering, lying baddie, isn't he?

Now, as I say, I'm not up on current affairs and politics. But it makes you think, doesn't it?
Thanks for listening,
Poppet

Amitai Etzioni

I've just discovered that Amitai Etzioni keeps a blog, and although I haven't had time to read much of it, it looks as though he updates it regularly.

For those of you who don't know, Etzioni is a distinguished academic and extremely influential communitarian thinker. But let me put it this way. If I was a betting man, I'd believe pretty much everything I heard about the election coming in February.

So what does this mean? Well Feb is a pretty unusual month for elections in the UK. In fact, we haven't had a February election since Wilson's win in 1974. Before that, you have to go back to 1950, and then consecutively in 1910 and 1906.

So why so unusual? Well I'm not sure it can be about the weather, with the assumption being that a low turnout favours the incumbent - 1974 saw the highest turnout in recent history. At a guess, I'd say that it would sweep the slate clean for the domestic agenda, buying the government a lot of time to work on the EU constitution referendum. But hey, looking outside, maybe it is the weather afterall.

High brow election commentary

Why the long face?

Hmm

Bin Laden eh? I'll try and point the way to the more interesting commentary out there.

Reshuffle! Always a cause of great excitement among us pointy-heads.

I have to take the fifth on the Labour ins-and-outs, but interesting goings on in Smith Square. David Cameron was always going to get a job, watch him for one of the big posts after the next election. The real surprise, for me, was that Oliver Letwin (who's been virtually anonymous in recent months) and Teresa May (never quite forgiven for her 'nasty party' comment) remained in post. The return of grandees Nicholas Soames and John Redwood is probably not the desparate act many have suggested, but an attempt to shore up core support.

Oh, and Christ! Is it me, or does this look a little...authoritarian?

Where's Boris?

This appears to be an extremely comprehensive, and therefore mildly concerning site dedicated to Boris Johnson. The ever-excellent Oxblog is there too, this time David Adesnik gets the nod.

On a serious point, some of the imagery at the RNC really rams home some of the differences between the electorate in the UK and the US. The patriotic music, the flags...the hats! I've no idea how it plays in the US, but I can't imagine it being anything but disasterous here. Anyone remember Neil Kinnock at the 1992 Conference in Sheffield?

Update: I saw Zell Miller's speech last night, and to be honest, I kind of see where Matt's coming from (for once!) - I saw Cheney's as well. Champagne Tony is in Athens and the rest are doing, well, whatever it is they do on their hols. A lack of politics in the news has left a hack like me with nothing to do to occupy his time (erm – except maybe write my thesis!?!).

So I thought I’d share a couple of stories about the Tory legend that is Michael Fabricant, the MP with a name most resembling that of a Bond villain.

Michael narrowly misses out being included on the ‘political hairdos’ series as he doesn’t possess a combover, but a particularly luxuriant wig. To be correct - a Woganesque three luxuriant wigs of varying length – presumably to give the impression of growth. The longest of these, however, is of truly huge proportions. Think Limahl, or Pat Sharpe in his pomp. Its Commons debut drew a collective gasp from the gallery.

The coiffured one also has a rather interesting night time habit (not that kind of habit – I’ve got no intention of turning into a kind of liberal Drudge). His Parliamentary office is near the roof, and occasionally, Michael has been know to venture out and, using the floodlights, project ‘bunny head’ shapes onto Big Ben.

Summer is rubbish

Rain, wasps and no Brains Trust until September.

Not sure if I'm going to cope, seeing as I'm the kind of degenerate who giggles everytime he sees Richard Titmuss on a reading list...

Political hairdos

Part 1 of an occasional series of topical political combovers

Nominee for CIA Director, Porter Goss:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/3551854.stm

Subtle, but distinguished. The use of performance-enhancing drugs appears endemic in athletics, not to mention other sports.

The way I see it, the problem isn't so much to do with pressure to compete, but that the use of illegal supplements and drugs has become an acceptable risk in the eyes of coaches and athletes alike. From my limited experience in high-level sport, almost everyone takes some form of (legal) supplement, not through personal choice, but because it is expected by managers and coaches. Protein supplements are incorporated into an athletes training regime and provided free of charge after training sessions. I can see that it can only be a short step between this and being persuaded to take performance-enhancing drugs.

Despite the fact that I'm usually really careful about what I put into my body, I'm ashamed to say that I've been persuaded to take the supplements provided without knowing exactly what was in them. Mind you, it didn't do me much good...!

Born to run

Now we all know the Boss speaks from the heart. But I sincerely believe that if he'd chosen to campaign by himself, he'd have had more impact. I just don't think any of those other bands can speak to ordinary Americans in the way that Springsteen does. REM just embody the kind of sixth form poetry that enrages you so much it makes you, y'know, want to slap someone just for the hell of it. And the Dixie Chicks? For Chrissakes man!

It's also really interesting to notice Bruce's luke-warm endorsement of Kerry/Edwards. Sure, he wants them to win, but I get the impression that like many of us, he can't help but wonder 'then what'. The truth is that whichever way you cut it, neither of them are fit to lace his boots.

Update: I was sorely tempted to title this post 'Bruce Almighty'.

Maxing the envelope!

I've been reading a fantastic article by Mario Luis Small, Culture, Cohorts and Social Organisation Theory: Understanding Local Participation in a Latino Housing Project. It is so good because he basically pushes social organisation theory to its limits by introducing a number of different critiques.

For him, I think, the most telling point is that he brings the idea of culture back into sociological debate, but the article appeals to me for two reasons. Firstly, Small makes a bridge between social theory and practice by reviving the debate about culture and placing it at the heart of his thinking around citizen participation and civil society - previously a no-go area. Secondly, his methods and the way he writes situate his work right at the coal face. The fact that you can empathise with his subjects and the social problems they face is a rare thing in contemporary sociological writing and has been rightly applauded (this paper won the Robert Park Award for Best Article in community and urban sociology from the American Sociological Association).

Unfortunately, it is really hard to find online, but it is available in the American Journal of Sociology 108 (1).

Convention! I did, though, manage to catch some of his introduction, and some of the responses on PMQ's.

My initial reaction was disappointment - this wasn't going to be a historical moment, and was beginning to sound like a fudge. But after a little thought, I think this could be one of those slow-burners. Butler was very careful not to portion out individual responsibility in his report. Where he did, as in the case of John Scarlett, he was at pains to point out that, well, heads shouldn't roll, so to speak.

But the fact remains that Butler did look at the evidence and find fault. He's a canny operator, and knows enough to realise that he doesn't have to name and shame - politicians, for all their faults, are smart enough to be able to do that. I'd also hazard a guess that, as a former cabinet secretary he'd be pretty uncomfortable doing this.

But his findings are interesting. Lets talk about the 45 minute claim as it is perhaps the most notorious. Butler found that this was based on shaky evidence, and was exaggerrated beyond its true importance. OK, so nothing new. He also asserted that it was exaggerated in good faith. Well sure, I don't think many people actually believed Blair was lying about that. But that is hardly the point. The war was sold on inaccurate information, and the government accepts this. So someone is at fault, and I don't think it will be long before critics of the government start laying blame.

So despite the fact that noone is really blamed in the document, it could prove to be a pretty big stick to beat the government with. I'm not 100% on all the content yet, but I'm pretty sure that some of his findings will have caused a few palpitations. Wait and see what happens...

The Lodge!

Well, here I am, stuck in the Porter's Lodge for my first really long shift. Not as interesting as I'd hoped. This post is a rundown of who I think might be the main candidates.

Firstly, I'd better be clear about something. I'm a member of the Labour Party, so I have a vested interest in this. While I can't pretend to be an 'insider', I'm basing this on conversations and hearsay from people whose opinion I respect. It'll be interesting to see how wrong I can be!

Gordon Brown: The obvious front-runner, but not a shoe-in. Without doubt, the most successful Labour Chancellor ever, but his tendency to polarise the party could cause him difficulty. The way he has structured the Treasury would not directly translate to No. 10, and he will need to go on a serious charm offensive to change the public's perception of him as rather dour and uncharismatic.

Alan Milburn: A very strong candidate. Has the left-wing credentials to please the dissident unions, but also popular with the Blairite right. Has been making a number of distinctly statesman-like speeches on public service reform of late, but will need to answer tough questions about the reasons for resigning his ministerial post if he runs.

John Reid: His comments this morning could signal his intentions to run, but I suspect that he won't, instead using loyalty to Brown to win one of the top cabinet jobs. He doesn't have too many years left, and I think if he thinks hard about it, he will realise that he cannot win.

Robin Cook: Will win support because of anti-war sentiment, and looks a certainty for a cabinet post whatever the outcome. I can't see him going for the top job, but he could act as kingmaker.

Alastair Darling: Anyone who can maintain a low profile in the DoT has to be a contender and I'd pitch him as a strong outsider. However, his profile could work against him in the long run, and the party leadership could be wary of the 'Alastair Who?' effect.

I think those are the main contenders, but I think there will be a standard-bearer from the left in there as well. It could be one of many, and I'd welcome any thoughts...

Mmmmmm

My friend (and long-suffering office-buddy) Lisa has gone to a conference in Edinburgh. He's already read 'My Life', while I've barely had enough time to log on this week, let alone post. I've read what Matt considers to be the 'first' book, and broadly agreewith what he says. Tragically, I find the minutae of Arkansas politics pretty interesting.

I don't think he's quite right about the lack of candour in the book, though. I've already noticed a couple of none-too-subtle digs at GWB. Still, he's right about one thing - it doesn't look like being anywhere near the best book on the Clinton presidency. That has to be Bob Woodward's 'The Choice'.

In case you get bored watching the game tonight...

This is brilliant!

Marvellous news! Bill Clinton has a book!

Cool, I've just finished another chapter of the PhD! Speaking of epic tomes, I bought the Clinton autobiography on Tues. Despite the pasting it has received in the press and, predictably, by conservative commentators, it isn't actually that bad. Sure, I'm only a couple of hundred pages in, but it is already better than Hillary's. For starters, he can actually write coherently. Also, a lot of the book might seem dull to those only interested in salacious gossip about his philanderings, or Whitewater, but I actually find the way he talks about his background candid and refreshing.

Oh, and unlike a lot of people who have reviewed it, I'm actually bothering to read it...Updates soon

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://rod-dacombe.blogspot.com/2004/06/marvellous-news-bill-clinton-has-book.html' title='Marvellous news!
